Out of the ashes of a defunct council social work building has risen a housing project built by Hadden Construciton that Angus Council is proud to put its name to.

The £2 million development at Carnoustie’s Camus House site is nearing completion and when finished will provide five new properties to Houses for Heroes Scotland, which provides housing for disabled veterans.

The site was visited on Tuesday by MSP Marco Biagi, the Minister for Local Government and Community Empowerment who was delighted by the joint initiative.

He said: “This is a great example of an attempt to create a small micro-community with a particular group of people, veterans with physical disabilities, while also being part of the wider town.

“It’s a really good example of community empowerment, where people come together and can have a mutually supportive relationship to help with their everyday lives.

“I have been touring around Scotland to hear about local priorities and local projects like this, which involves partnerships with communities and charities.”

Hadden Construction is the building contractor on the project, which aims to be completed by Spring this year. Site manager Derrick Brown is pleased with the progress. He said: “This is the first time we have worked with the charity Houses for Heroes and everything is going very well. We are ahead of schedule and it is looking really good.”

Peter Minshall, chief executive of Houses for Heroes Scotland, said: “This is wonderful for families and servicemen from the local area who really need the safety of these homes here in Angus.”

The charity will allocate the houses to wounded ex-servicemen through the Veterans Scotland Central Housing Register.

The development underpins Angus Council’s commitment to support the Armed Forces Community through a Community Covenant. The purpose of the Covenant is to encourage support for the Armed Forces Community working and residing in Angus and to recognise and remember the sacrifices made by members of this Armed Forces Community. Angus Council’s leader Iain Gaul also visited the site on Tuesday to show his support of the council’s dedication to servicemen and servicewomen.

The 4,430 square metre West Path development also includes a mix of 16 semi-detached and terraced homes.
