Children from Law Primary helped East Lothian Council Planning spokesperson Councillor Norman Hampshire and Stephen Lynas, Business Development Director, from Hadden Construction to mark the beginning of work on the new expansion project at Law Primary School, North Berwick.

There will be a new, south-facing, two-storey extension that will house:

  • 16 classrooms with breakout areas
  • Two tutorial rooms
  • A general purpose/music room
  • A library
  • Resource rooms and general storage
  • A Meeting room
  • New staff offices.

The extension will be home for children in Primary 4, 5, 6 and 7. This will enable the current school buildings to be reconfigured to meet the needs of Primary 1, 2 and 3. The new shared accommodation will include:

  • A new three-court hall with a full-height moveable wall, creating a movement and dance studio
  • Further changing and toilet facilities
  • An extended dining area
  • An after-hours entrance for community use with a janitor’s office adjacent.

There will also be a new main entrance and improved car parking.

The work is expected to be completed by summer 2018 and will cost £8.5 million.

East Lothian Council Planning spokesperson said:

‘Housing in North Berwick is booming and the council has been careful to make sure that this is a good mix of council and housing association property, discounted housing and owner-occupier properties.

‘This means that we are already welcoming lots of new families to North Berwick and we are expanding Law Primary accordingly. All children at Law will benefit from the expansion project, as it’s not just about new buildings but also about reconfiguring our existing school so that our younger primary children will be working in modern and spacious surroundings too.’

Stephen Lynas from Hadden Construction added:

‘We’re delighted to have been appointed to this key education project for North Berwick and look forward to working in partnership with East Lothian Council and Law Primary School to successfully deliver this substantial school investment.’
