The children at Balbardie Primary in Bathgate have had lessons about staying safe while construction work takes place at their school.

Representatives from Hadden Construction visited Balbardie to speak to pupils about the steps that have been taken to ensure their safety while work is taking place on site, as well as discuss what the children can do to ensure they keep themselves and others safe.

We also talked pupils through what kinds of machines and equipment will be used in the construction process, including demonstrating some of the safety equipment, and launching a competition to design a safety poster to be displayed around the building site.

Work starts shortly on the 615 sq m extension to create a dining hall, multi-use assembly hall and link corridor to the main school building.  The contemporary design of the extension includes a sedum roof, larch timber cladding and powder-coated aluminium windows and doors.

Balbardie headteacher Greg Welsh said staff, parents and pupils are looking forward to seeing the work at the school completed.

He said: “There’s a real excitement in the school community that work is going to start on our new extension soon, which will bring a huge number of benefits including modern sports facilities and new dining facilities for pupils.

“The safety of our pupils is our main priority while this work is taking place so it was great that Hadden were able to come in and speak to the children about the process.

“It showed our pupils that every effort is being made to keep them secure, as well as highlighting the part they can play to keep themselves safe.

Stephen Lynas from Hadden Construction said: “It was great to speak to pupils and we look forward to working closely with the pupils, school staff and West Lothian Council’s design team to successfully deliver a project that will benefit so many children.”
