Antonine Primary School is a Winner

Our recently completed extension to the Antonine Primary School in Falkirk has won an award for the Best Commercial Building of the Year from the Stirling Society of Architects.

Antonine Primary School sits on a World Heritage Site (Antonine Wall) and has a Scheduled Ancient Monument within yards of the classrooms.

The construction work involved:

  • Building three new classrooms
  • Tripling the size of the existing hall
  • Building a new nursery facility
  • Doubling the size of the car park

All of the above works had to be carried out while the school was fully occupied, so the phasing of the development had to be carefully considered.

The classroom extension had to be built into a tight, dark corner of the site with minimal views out, so rooflights were used extensively to maximise natural light from above.  The semi enclosed classrooms are accessed from a brightly lit central activity space creating a hub for this wing of the school.

The gym extension was constructed within the existing building footprint and required extensive remodelling of the roofscape.

The new nursery has been located at the school entrance to allow safe access for pupil drop-off and a direct connection to the existing school.  Extensive roof lighting and feature acoustic ceilings provide a bright, open and relaxing teaching space for pupils and teaching staff.

Further alterations to the main staff room, general purpose room and management offices successfully completed this complex school extension project.
