Councillor King said: “I’m delighted to see work start on delivering the new £3 million East Calder Partnership Centre. I’m proud to have supported this project since it was first proposed and through the council’s committee process, to work starting onsite now.

“The start on-site is the culmination of a lot of effort by council officers and the community who have worked tirelessly to get us to this point, so thank you to everyone involved.

“The local community have been very engaged in the process, and are really supportive and enthusiastic about the project.

“The centre will create a new focal point for the village, bringing together services and groups under one roof in a central location.

“East Calder is a growing community and it’s vital we have the right facilities and services available to meet the needs of the local community.

“Partnership centres in Broxburn, Bathgate and Fauldhouse have delivered real boosts for their communities, and I look forward to seeing East Calder Partnership Centre delivering similar benefits for the whole village.”

Hadden Construction have been appointed to carry out the construction work.

Hadden Construction Chairman Scott Hadden said: “We’re delighted to extend our excellent on-going working relationship with West Lothian Council with the construction of this new Partnership Centre which will be a fantastic asset for the village.”

A number of other improvement works will be taking place around the new East Calder Partnership Centre including a new parking area, improved access and complementary improvements proposed to the neighbouring park.

Eddy Goodfellow, chair of the new partnership centre consultation committee, said: “Everyone is looking forward to the new East Calder Partnership Centre opening.

“The new facility will be a real boost for all the groups who currently use the old community education centre, and also service the local football teams with the new changing rooms.”

Michelle Herron, chair of East Calder Community Council, added: “It’s great to see work start on the new East Calder Partnership Centre.

“The investment will deliver a welcome boost to services in the village, which are currently reaching capacity due to ongoing housing development in and around the village.”

The new Partnership Centre in East Calder will bring together the currently dispersed services in East Calder into a centrally located hub building.

Building proposals have been developed in parallel with a masterplanning strategy which aims to establish a green link through the town centre site and across Main Street. The green link is proposed as a shared space which will create a new civic centre for East Calder, connecting the playing fields in the east and the River Almond to the west.

The two primary building uses of a library and community multi purpose halls provided the opportunity to create a distinct building form of two volumes which have been arranged around a south facing entrance garden and play area. The community library has been located to overlook the Main Street whilst the multi purpose halls have been orientated to overlook and open out to the playing fields. Green roofs have been proposed to the two building volumes to further establish the concept of the green link.
